Aiki Weapons Workshop.
21st July 2012
Principles; strong and accurate defence, take their centre, keep yours, proper distance, blending, not becoming the attacker, free mind, good posture engaging the hips and extension of body and spirit.
Always be prepared … learn both sides of partner work .. both are prepared.
Jo Suburi. 1. Choku zuki (basic thrust)
Body moves as one … Balanced thrust or Tsuki … Equilibrium in body. … Intention and spirit forward but energy all around….. consider not putting body in danger line.
13. Katate hachi noji gaeshi (single hand figure eight)
Being connected through the body … connect mind and spirit too …. Use opposite hip and arm to maximise whole body power…. This is a glancing strike with Jo at an angle … Maintain equilibrium in self … Any movement by the partner should never disturb your own centre .. (hand to hand pushing exercise)
Jo awase.
Opening both left and right blending with thrust. Basic and flowing.
Few things work unless you set them up properly first … applies to everything in life. Make an opening to invite the attack (thrust) step back and parry. (do left side and right) Practice basic, Kihon, and here are 3 reasons why. 1. Teaches you correct maiai (fighting distance) allows you to check your posture 3. Allows you to see clearly where the real danger of the attack exists.
Boken. Suburi, No 1 , simple strike.
Simple … so simple , do not look for anything difficult … just swing that piece of wood.
5. stepping strike with ken sweeping out to right or left.
Load up first, we aretraining the body, kihon first. Do not give away your intention.
Kumi – Tachi 3rd movement.
Once again ‘3’s Initial deflection … why and how . half lift and step back defence , load step strike …variations and risks to balance in flowing attack.
Extracts from Jo Kata from 13 kata using 2nd move .. left side parry followed by hasso move to right
They tski chest we start ken kamae and block high to parry down using hips weight on back leg and then tski
They tski kidneys we do hasso (variation) and strike head.
Then go to jodan gaeshi move near end.
We step back taking Jo to left … they tski chest we do high gaeshi block and high tski to their chest.
Warnings to head, hands etc
Partner work for these three moves from above.
Jo Dori .. Jo taking. From thrust , blend and counter thrust. Basic move.
Jo Nage.. Using the Jo to pin or throw.
Kumijo No 10.
Ken kamae they Tsuki
Kaiten Barai they pick up feeling and stepping with right foot strike to head
Don’t change right hand !!
Step left raising Jo to ‘roof of house’ they step in left foot and strike
Simultaneously slide right hand on Jo and raise to left in high posture … step in with left avoiding strike and place Jo on their left shoulder and right wrist. ( Explain throw)
Kentaijo.
From tsuki defence parrying right the ken strike, then left side then hold.
Open to right with Jo they step forward with right foot to strike head
Parry to left
then return to Tskikamae
Open jo to left pick up feeling and step with left to strike head
Parry to right they begin another strike but you hold your ground with Tsuki
Do not attack …. Even intention may be an attack …. Who said Aikido was easy ?
(A tree won’t attack you … but would you run into it?)
Harmony ….. peace ……. Aiki.
